An anesthesiologist is a type of physician that focuses on taking care of surgical patients and providing pain relief. They work during surgery to maintain a patient’s life functions and outside of the operating room to provide pain relief to a variety of hospital patients.

All physicians must obtain the proper education before they can begin practicing. The most common educational path includes a high school diploma, four years of undergrad school, four years of medical school, and three to eight years of internships and residencies.

After obtaining the required education, all physicians must also become licensed in the state in which they wish to practice. This is done by passing the United States Medical Licensing Examination. Most anesthesiologists also have to undergo a criminal check.
