Door-to-door sales workers, news and street vendors, and related workers are responsible for visiting people’s homes or businesses or setting up shop on the street in an effort to sell a variety of products or services.
There are no formal education requirements in order to become this type of sales employee, as most workers learn the majority of what they need through on-the-job training. However, a degree in a sales related field may help employees climb up the career ladder faster. You also may be asked to undergo an employee background check.
There were about 182,000 door-to-door sales workers, news and street vendors, and related workers throughout the nation during 2008, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The majority of those individuals were self-employed.
Unfortunately, employment of these workers nationwide is expected to rapidly decline during the near future, decreasing by at least 10 percent by 2018. However, there will still be about 33,100 job openings in this occupation.
And while employment in the Gulf Coast area – where Houston is located – is anticipated to remain even at about 400 workers, employment throughout Texas should continue to grow. According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the occupation is expected to increase from 2,150 workers during 2006 to 2,250 workers by 2016.

- Newspaper, periodical, book, and directory publishers – 2.30 percent
During 2009, these workers in the Gulf Coast area earned an average wage of $14.83 per hour, while those throughout Texas earned an average wage of $16.99 per hour and those across the nation earned an average wage of $12.65 per hour.
